The 10-Minute Rule That Changed Everything

The 10-Minute Rule That Changed Everything

July 27, 20262 min read

If you have been around me for more than five minutes, you have heard me say it.

Ten minutes. That's all.

Not because ten minutes is magical. Not because ten minutes will transform your house. Not because ten minutes is some clever ADHD hack I read about on the internet.

Ten minutes because that is what I had on the worst day.

Years ago, in the season I now call the in-between, I could not look at my own house. The kitchen counter felt like a personal attack. The pile by the door was a monument to my failure. The laundry on the chair had its own zip code.

And every productivity guru I followed was telling me to block off three hours, prep the bins, label the categories, and stage the donate pile in the garage. I would read those words and feel my nervous system shut completely down.

I had ten minutes. Ten minutes before the Beans came home. Ten minutes before the next thing. Ten minutes before I gave up entirely and ate cereal standing over the sink.

So I set a timer for ten minutes. I cleared one corner of the counter. Just one. The timer went off. I stopped.

The next day I did it again. Ten minutes. A different corner.

Within a few weeks my kitchen was clear. Not because I had done some massive transformation. Because I had stopped waiting for the three-hour block that was never coming.

Here is what nobody tells you about the ten-minute rule. The rule is not the timer. The rule is the permission. The rule is the radical, life-changing belief that ten minutes counts. That half-done is still progress. That something is always better than nothing.

If you are an ADHD brain like me, this is your way back in. If you are a perfectionist, this is your medicine. If you are exhausted, this is the only entry point that actually works.

Set the timer. Do one thing. Stop when the timer goes off. Yes, even if you are mid-decision. Especially if you are mid-decision.

That is the whole method, beautiful soul. The rest is just practice.

The full method, with all the stories and the step-by-step framework, lives in my book Creating Space with Julie: A Step-by-Step Guide to Decluttering and Self-Care. The ten-minute rule is the doorway. The book is what happens after you walk through. It is gentle, permission-based, and written for the woman who has tried everything else.

P.S. Set a timer for ten minutes today. Do one tiny thing. Reply and tell me what you did. I love hearing this.

I was where you are, I felt completely overwhelmed by clutter. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get ahead, and the piles kept growing along with my frustration.

  • Why does decluttering seem easy for everyone but me?

  • Why do I feel embarrassed to invite people over?

  • Why am I so exhausted and unworthy?

  • When will it finally get easier?

It wasn’t until I discovered the power of self-care and simple tools that everything changed. By prioritizing myself, I found the energy to create a peaceful, organized home.

Welcome to my little corner of serenity!

Testimonials

''I highly recommend her for your

next organizational project!''

''Everyone needs a non-judgmental “best friend” who will work shoulder-to-shoulder with you as you work toward your organizational goals. Julie is that best friend. In the kindest and gentlest way, Julie helped me work through a large project in smaller, more manageable tasks. She kept me focused on the task at hand, dealing with both the physical and emotional attachment I had with some of the items I had held on to for much too long. Whether it’s a short-term or long-term project, Julie can help you get to the finish line! I highly recommend her for your next organizational project!'' - Kathy

''She opened my mind to new tools and strategies into my daily life''

''My experience with Julie was incredible. She is a kind, calming, safe space. I enjoyed the exercise we did together. It really help me view my emotions from a different perspective. She knew what questions to ask and how to help me analyze my feelings. She’s educated in what she does. I would love to do it again with her!! She opened my mind to new tools and strategies into my daily life. ❤️❤️❤️''- Kate

''It quickly gave me perspective on how I allow my emotions take control''

''The exercise was quick and effective. It quickly gave me perspective on how I allow my emotions take control. It’s interesting how I had immediate answers to the questions I was asked. I can only speak for myself, but this changed my thoughts for that day and I was present. I did continue to think about the exercise the following day and tried to remember how I felt when I answered the questions. I believe it was effective. I plan on using that exercise or at least remember what I answered when I feel like I’m spiraling or overthinking my thoughts'' - Maritza

''I feel about myself and take care of myself is related to so many aspects of my life, including my relationships and decluttering my home.''

''Being in this community with Julie’s guidance has helped me to understand about Self Care and Self Love, two concepts that were very foreign to me. I get it know, and I’m learning more all the time about how the way I feel about myself and take care of myself is related to so many aspects of my life, including my relationships and decluttering my home.'' - Laura
