Reclaim Your Space
Transform Your Life Blog

This one comes up in almost every coaching call I have ever had.
How do I declutter when my partner doesn't care? How do I create calm when my kids leave their stuff everywhere? How do I get my parents to let go of any of the things in the basement?
I want to say something kind and then I want to say something true.
Kind first. You are not crazy. The clutter is affecting your nervous system. The mess is taking up real estate in your brain. The pile by the door is not just a pile. You are not imagining the toll.
Now the true part. You cannot organise another person into respecting your need for calm.
I know. I am sorry. I have tried it. I have tried every version of it. I have left baskets at the bottom of the stairs and labelled bins and gentle reminders and not-so-gentle reminders and the silent treatment and the angry treatment and the bargaining treatment. None of it worked, beautiful soul. Not for long.
Here is what did work, eventually.
I stopped trying to control the shared spaces and I started claiming one space as mine. A drawer. A corner. A shelf. One small geography of the house where I got to decide what stayed and what left.
That one shelf changed something in me. Not because the shelf was magical. Because I had stopped waiting for everyone else to want what I wanted. I had stopped making my peace depend on their behaviour.
And here is the part that surprised me. When I stopped pushing, things softened. Not all the way. But more than they ever did when I was pushing.
The Beans started picking up after themselves in small ways. Don put his shoes in the same spot most days. Nobody was perfect. Nobody became a new person. But the energy in the house shifted because I shifted.
If you live with people who do not care about clutter the way you do, here is your soft homework.
Pick one space that is yours. Decide what stays. Decide what goes. Make it feel like you. Do not announce it. Do not make it a project. Just claim it quietly. Then let everyone else have the rest of the house for now.
Your nervous system will thank you. And often, eventually, your people will too.
If you have been carrying this alone, beautiful soul, come into YMTYS. There is a whole community of women navigating the exact same dynamics, sharing what works, and reminding each other that wanting calm is not asking too much. Selena and I would love to welcome you in.

P.S. Tell me. What is the one space you are going to claim this week? I will hold it with you.

I help you reclaim your home from clutter, so you can find ease and live your life with joy. I am your Professional Decluttering Life Coach, Wellness Facilitator, and Trifecta Alchemy Practitioner.
I was where you are, I felt completely overwhelmed by clutter. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get ahead, and the piles kept growing along with my frustration.
Why does decluttering seem easy for everyone but me?
Why do I feel embarrassed to invite people over?
Why am I so exhausted and unworthy?
When will it finally get easier?

''I highly recommend her for your
next organizational project!''
''Everyone needs a non-judgmental “best friend” who will work shoulder-to-shoulder with you as you work toward your organizational goals. Julie is that best friend. In the kindest and gentlest way, Julie helped me work through a large project in smaller, more manageable tasks. She kept me focused on the task at hand, dealing with both the physical and emotional attachment I had with some of the items I had held on to for much too long. Whether it’s a short-term or long-term project, Julie can help you get to the finish line! I highly recommend her for your next organizational project!'' - Kathy

''She opened my mind to new tools and strategies into my daily life''
''My experience with Julie was incredible. She is a kind, calming, safe space. I enjoyed the exercise we did together. It really help me view my emotions from a different perspective. She knew what questions to ask and how to help me analyze my feelings. She’s educated in what she does. I would love to do it again with her!! She opened my mind to new tools and strategies into my daily life. ❤️❤️❤️''- Kate

''It quickly gave me perspective on how I allow my emotions take control''
''The exercise was quick and effective. It quickly gave me perspective on how I allow my emotions take control. It’s interesting how I had immediate answers to the questions I was asked. I can only speak for myself, but this changed my thoughts for that day and I was present. I did continue to think about the exercise the following day and tried to remember how I felt when I answered the questions. I believe it was effective. I plan on using that exercise or at least remember what I answered when I feel like I’m spiraling or overthinking my thoughts'' - Maritza

''I feel about myself and take care of myself is related to so many aspects of my life, including my relationships and decluttering my home.''
''Being in this community with Julie’s guidance has helped me to understand about Self Care and Self Love, two concepts that were very foreign to me. I get it know, and I’m learning more all the time about how the way I feel about myself and take care of myself is related to so many aspects of my life, including my relationships and decluttering my home.'' - Laura
